CalRENEW-1: A Shovel Ready Source of Green Jobs and Renewable Energy

In the quest for shovel ready renewable energy projects to help jump-start the U.S. economy by creating new green jobs, President Obama and the U.S. Department of Energy need look no further than Cleantech America's 5 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic solar farm, CalRENEW-1. Scheduled to begin operation no later than April 2010 in Mendota, CA, CalRENEW-1 will sell zero emission electricity to Pacific Gas & Electric under a long-term power purchase agreement.

In January 2008, CalRENEW-1 became the first utility-scale photovoltaic solar farm to be approved by the California Public Utilities Commission under the state's Renewables Portfolio Standard program. The solar farm will help California meet its stringent renewable energy and carbon reduction goals.

CalRENEW-1 will stimulate green jobs training, create new green jobs, and attract new renewable industry to the state's economically distressed San Joaquin Valley. In addition to its economic stimulus benefits, as a reliable, zero emission peaking photovoltaic solar facility, CalRENEW-1 will move the San Joaquin Valley towards cleaner air and provide renewable electricity to the area when local demand is the greatest.
